Friday night at 9pm we got a message from a fellow rescuer - 2 bulldogs had been found as strays and the finder needed to surrender to rescue. She had reached out to several rescues hoping someone had the space and funds to take them in- the boy seemed to have some sort of injury. Upon receipt of photos, it appeared he had a pretty significant prolapsed rectum. Being a new rescue we were unsure we had the funds to support his care. But Bullie Nation never lets each other down - 3 other rescues stepped up and said they would either take them in, or if we could take them, they would assist in fundraising for us. To say we're amazed and thankful for the support of our fellow rescues is quite the understatement.
We agreed to take them in and we reached out to the finder to arrange pick up that night (which is now around 10pm)! But when we reached out to the finder, she indicated that she had posted them on Facebook and received a response from someone who claimed to be the owner. Given the condition of the dogs, and the fact that they were unaltered, we encouraged her to contact Animal Control so that it was on record that this person's neglected unaltered dogs were found loose. We also begged her not to surrender without first seeing proof that this person was in fact the owner. Let's be honest - everyone with bad intentions is going to try to claim an unaltered pair of English Bulldogs!!
Unfortunately, the finder stated that the owner was able to provide proof that these were in fact her dogs and the finder gave them back to her. She asked her to reach out to rescue if needed because of the boy's condition.
We were disappointed but we cannot withhold "property" from a person, even though that property is a living breathing bulldog in such pain! The finder gave us the owners name, but not address - so we were going to do a little research and ask Animal Control to follow up with a well check to ensure the boy received medical treatment.
Fast forward to 5 days...
The individual who found the dog as strays comes home to find them both tied to her porch with a note that reads, "Just give to rescue, I can't afford treatment." She immediately reaches back out to us and tells us the boy is even worse off at this point. She rushes them to a local vet, who refuses to see them even though another sister-rescue had called with a credit card! So she drives the dogs to a board member's house. We send photos back and forth with a couple other rescues, vet techs, and veterinarians - all the feedback we received was to apply a Betadine Sugar paste to it to keep it lubricated and try to reduce the inflammation, then take to vet in the morning for surgery.
Our amazing animal communicator Coryelle reached out to them when we posted a live FB video and did a session right then with them, Listen below:

Some photos of Louie and his sister Corina from their first night with HBR....Some photos are quite graphic! The prolapse has been there for quite some time as indicated by the necrosis! The stench was unbearable.
His ears are a mess! But really that's the least of his worries....
Thank you to Courtney, Jen, and Adria who gave us some advice on making a Betadine Sugar Paste for his tushy! We will try to bring down the inflammation tonight before taking him in tomorrow.
"Whatcha doing guys? What's that for? Is that for me to eat? I'm kinda hungry...."
"Well this is awkward....we just met!"
"That was pretty weird for all of us, but I do feel better now. Thank you!"
Thursday 11/9/2017 8am Update:
Melissa & Becky are taking the boy to MedVet Indianapolis today for surgery. We reached out to Dr. Busch our regular vet , sent her photos, and she agrees he needs to be seen right away. Since she is in surgery at another facility all day today, we reached out to Dr Fitzwater at MedVet and we have an 11am appointment to get him seen. She advised we may have to do a biopsy, but the on-call doctor will let us know more once he's seen.
We anticipate a large bill at MedVet. Any donation is helpful to us. We are a new, small rescue and desperately need more funds.

Corina is definitely not in as bad shape as her brother, but she's still a hot mess! Her nails are so long. Her breathing is horrible - she sounds as if she's about to overheat after walking 10 steps! She had feces stained down her side and reeked of neglect. She is such a beautiful dog - they both are! - how can anyone let them get into this condition??? It's just heartbreaking. They deserve so much better. Oh and she's in heat! She'll be spayed as soon as we can... We're not risking another pyometra!

She was so stinky when she was surrendered, she got a bath that same night. But she continues to potty in her crate and then lays in it. She's obviously not spent much time outside of it. According to our animal communicator, she was only taken out of the crate when "bad things" happened to her. This poor girl needs to learn she no longer has to potty where she sleeps! And she no longer has to spend life in a cage! Life is about to get so good baby girl!!!

It took some persuading and lots of loving, but scared little Corina made her way outside with the rest of the pack this afternoon. She loved exploring the backyard with the other pups. Even though it's really cool out, we couldn't spend much time outside because her breathing got so bad so fast. We went back in and relaxed on the couch to recover :)
7pm Thursday update
Called MedVet to check on Louie. They said he''s holding up great and is loving all the attention. They're all shocked to see his condition has gotten this far without treatment! Poor baby will feel so much better tomorrow!!!

Friday update:
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
We wanted to have all the information before we posted an update. It's been a whirlwind of only about 2 days...
Let me start by saying the boy is stable. The surgeon called me this morning, and while they could probably keep him stable through the weekend, surgery is inevitable. We also risk further complications due to the tissue continuing to die off. Why am I even talking about waiting on surgery you may be asking?
Let me now back up….
I was sent a screenshot of Indy Lost Pets post Thursday night at 6pm- the 2 bulldogs that were surrendered to us Wednesday night. Lost? How is she posting lost when she tied them to someone’s porch? If she thinks we’re going to take care of his medical condition and then give him back, she’s crazy!
We called the finder – "I know you said you forgot to bring the note with you when you surrendered the dogs, but we need it now. You have to get it to us today so we can show that she dumped them."
That’s when the finder broke down crying and told us the real story....
They were simply a Good Samaritan who had witnessed the dogs roaming the streets in the past. This Good Sam saw the dogs in a neglectful environment – they’re left out in the backyard all day and they’re kept in the garage at night. They claim 2 have already died of overheating. Because many neighbors know where they live, the dogs are always returned without local authorities ever being contacted.
Let me pause and emphasize this –
If you find a dog - notify the local authorities (likely your local shelter).
If you see a dog that needs medical help - contact your local authorities (likely the local shelter)
If your neighbors dogs continual get loose – take them to the shelter and then notify a breed specific rescue that they're there.
In all of these equations, the flow chart ends in "Contact your local authorities"
Everyone please stop thinking the shelter is a bad thing – we NEED a legal paper trail to do ANYTHING to help these dogs in the long run!
And for everyone’s sake, DON’T LIE! Don't lie to the people who can help!!! You only put yourself and everyone else in a horrible place that may jeopardize what we can actually do to help these dogs!
So of course we immediately reached out to Indy Lost Pets to let them know we found the dogs and they were safe. We also reached out to Animal Care & Control and left messages with multiple people.
We once again scanned the dogs to be sure there was no microchip and left a message with MedVet to call us. The surgeon indicated this morning that while he could probably keep Louie stable through the weekend - surgery was the only option to save this boy. The longer we wait, the more tissue dies off. Ultimately we could not live with ourselves if we did not finally help this boy get the treatment he's been withheld for so long.
Animal Control officers have already started an investigation and have been to the owners house. We will be meeting with them as soon as the boy is ready to be discharged. The two dogs will be turned over to Indianapolis Animal Care & Control. We have to. Even though it's in the dog's best interest to stay in rescue and find a loving home, legally these dogs are considered property. And we have someone's property.
I have also left a message for the owner and will attempt to contact her again later today and encourage her to avoid fines and surrender to rescue. I need everyone to start thinking GOOD thoughts that she will do the RIGHT thing and surrender these dogs!
IF these dogs go back to her - I have already researched the lineage of the boy. And let me just say- there will be consequences from the bulldog world regardless of what happens with Animal Control you better believe it.
So that being said - we were lied to. But we won't hide the truth from anyone else. We felt we had an ethical obligation to help this boy no matter the outcome. If you have donated to his care and feel uncomfortable with this possible outcome - PLEASE just send us a message. We will refund any donation without hesitation. I would like to say I'll rest easy knowing he got the medical care he needs - but believe me, there will be no resting until there is justice for these dogs. You know that saying about Karma.... it's coming.
I will end this on a good note - the hospital just let us know Louie is coming out of surgery now. Praying he wakes up easy and without complication. He will at least finally find some relief back there. The surgeon indicated that they did an ultrasound before going in because they were concerned it was actually small bowel coming out. Everyone's positive thoughts must be streaming through, because it was not the small bowel and they were able to reduce the tissue and go in through the abdomen and correct the issue. They indicated they wanted to start him on a dewormer today, but I urged them to run a fecal test before dosing. I want to know if, what kind, and how severe of a case of internal parasites this guy has due to owner neglect! Not to mention the fleas they stated they found on him. Clearly no monthly preventative was likely given.... I just pray he does not also have heartworm! I guess we will find out soon enough.
Thank you everyone for your support of our new rescue. Seeing how Bullie Nation came together to help us is incredible. Don't forget we still have LucyAnn undergoing heartworm treatment. Kate & Pippa recovering from their spays (Pippa is so skinny and scared), and old man Brutus who will be losing a few front teeth due to neglected dental hygeine. They still need us and we will keep going for them. We won't let them down.

Friday 11/11/2017 update:
A little before and after of Louie’s back side :)
Thanks to our supporters, he is finally pain free! We couldn’t have helped this boy without you, and for that we are forever grateful. Thank you to Louie’s surgeon Dr Martin and all the staff at MedVet - Indianapolis for taking such great care of Louie!!
Louie was released from the hospital today and is headed (for now) back to his foster home. Recovery is critical. He will need to eat 4-5 small soft bland meals a day. We will be monitoring his ability to 💩 intently! We will also watch the incision carefully for infection. Given the damage to his scrotum from constant licking of the area, we aren’t takin any chances with him licking it after his scrotum ablation. He will be supervised constantly or in a cone of shame to prevent him from licking the incision in the same way! Sorry buddy, but it’s for your own good!
For clarity purposes, a found report is being made with ACC. ACC may begin an investigation upon receipt of the dogs.
Please continue keeping Louie and Corina in your thoughts. Thank you again for all of your support! ❤️
Sunday 11/12/2017 update:
Thank you for the continued love and support for our fosters. Corina and Louie are under investigation by local authorities. We are fully cooperating with this investigation. At this time, our updates regarding the dogs will be limited. We will share with you all any news that we are able to.
Thank you again!
11/16/17
He’s baaack! Yep! Louie is back on Facebook!
We can’t go into many of the details of the investigation but we are happy to report that Louie is recovering well from his surgery. We thank you for the generous donations provided from all over the United States. 😘❤️
In sadder news, we must share that Corina has passed over the rainbow bridge. There were unforeseen complications and we are deeply heartbroken by them. We loved Corina from the depth of our soul for the short time that we had her, and that love will continue on. We will never forget her. We find peace in the fact that Corina’s remains will be returned to her foster family. We will continue to be the voice for all bulldogs in need in memory of Corina.
12/2/2017 Louie meets Santa Paws!
2/11/2018 Louie joins us at Pet Valu for our Kiss-A-Bull event!
2/13/2018 Louie saw Dr Cole today at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital!
He's starting a new food before his upcoming adoption trial!
4/11/18
Louie is back from his trial adoption. While we're disappointed it didn't work, we have a lot of insight into what he needs in his forever home. His adoption trial was with a couple with one other bulldog and no children in the home. They have experience with behavior issues. They did slow introduction with the dogs, and consulted support from trainers. Unfortunately Louie does not share the home well with others.
We have learned a lot, including he needs to be an only dog. He gets along well with others at events and while out of the home, but he is very dominant in the home.
Louie is doing much better being fed 3-4 smaller meals a day. For one this helps with digestion given his history of severe prolapsed rectum. But also due to his previous neglect meals were never promised- it wasn't uncommon for his owner to run out of food. Louie eats like he's never eaten before. Once he was given smaller more frequent meals, he became less reactive in the home.
Louie still has a long way to go .... For 2 years he was not given proper care or love.
Adopters will only be considered who meet the following criteria:
1. Have bulldog experience
2. Continue his current diet (preferably be able to feed 3 meals a day vs just 2)
3. Will continue positive-based basic obedience.
4. No other pets in the home.
August 2018 LOUIE UPDATE:
Personality: loving, sweet, stubborn, loves attention and affection, prefers to be the center of attention, curious.
Favorite Toys: chew toys and balls
Habits: I love being with my people. There is no such thing as to much attention. I don’t like lawnmowers, power tools, vacuum sweeper, or bring in my crate when people are home.
Potty Routine: completely potty trained, I don’t have accidents, I can be crated when my family is at work for up to 8 hours and I don’t have accidents.
Current sleeping arrangements: I’m happy to nap in my favorite chair but I sleep in my crate at night.
Behavior with others:
Kids? Older kids (12 and up)
Other dogs? Some dogs, I’m VERY SELECTIVE
Cats? Yes
Behavioral Concerns: Sometimes I can be overly needy - if I want your attention and I’m not getting it I sometimes bark at you until I get it, or I paw and nudge my way. I’m also curious with objects that you may have in your hands and I sometimes jump at the object because I’m nosy and need to know what it is.
Tricks/Obedience: I can sit and shake
