Welcome Fred & Ethel Mertz
This poor little couple have been bred and bred. They stink like hay and they appear to be very malnourished and uncared for. They were rescued from a well-known puppy mill area. We’ll get them to the vet ASAP. Needles to say we love them already!!

Fred & Ethel are setting right in.
1/20/21 10:30 pm Fred Update: Please send pawsitive thoughts to Fred. He went downhill tonight and is feeling really crummy. They both had really gross loose poops when they first came in. But by the next day they started to firm up. Ethel still has nice firm poop but Fred went backwards tonight. All of a sudden he has bad diarrhea and now he’s pretty weak. They have a vet appt at 8am tomorrow so I THINK we can hold out. He got another bath today bc well he had poopy bottom. He’s not a fan of the bath but Ethel realized it was amazing and she now loves it. They also got their talons trimmed , spent some time out in the sun, and had a really good day. I’m so sad for Fred now. He’s very weak and puny. |
1/21/21 12am Fred Update:
Fred started shaking and then started panting. I started worrying about pancreatitis So I went and got my boots and coat to head to the ER. But then he laid down & seems comfortable. Still shaking just a little sometimes but not all the time. Breathing is normal. No vomiting. No abdominal pain when I palpate. Gums are nice and pink. I haven’t taken his temp. I hear his tummy gurgle just a little so maybe he just has a really bad upset tummy from all the change. I’ve been feeding several small meals a day as it’s important not to shock the body of a starved animal and cause Refeeding Syndrome. But the guy who had them for a day before surrendering said he “fed them a lot cuz they’re so skinny”. So who knew what they’ve been eating. He had a really great day & was so full of energy.... he was even a little annoying lol I need to share some of the pics I took earlier today. He looked so much better. Which makes me worry that this hit so suddenly. So I’m just sitting here with snow boots on & my purse still around my shoulder.... staring at him. ......... |
1/21/21 8:30am Fred Update: Made it through the night. Slept really well and only got up one more time after the last post to poop. It’s crazy liquid. But my fecal test came back negative (they dropped off an earlier sample to get the results back for our appt today). So that’s good news. Bad news my hind leg started to give out on me. I can’t walk very far. I’m at the vet now getting checked out. Please keep sending me pawsitive thoughts. - Fred |
1/21/21 FRED & ETHEL PUPDATE:
We are at the vet now. So feeling a lot better about the situation… Overall Ethel looks pretty good. Obviously emaciated, some debris in her ears, and she has one tooth that likely needs removed. So will set up an appointment for her to be spayed and get that tooth removed. But overall her other teeth don’t look too terrible so that’s good. She’ll just need to get some groceries in her and a few ear flushes and she should be good to go.
Fred… So they don’t think it’s pancreatitis. Likely just an upset stomach but because he’s older and so emaciated it just took a toll on him. He hasn’t vomited, but he’s not eating, so we’re doing a cerenia injection for nausea and starting some meds for the diarrhea. He’s obviously got a lot of arthritis, so the vet thinks that the toll of posturing and being weak from the diarrhea is causing his rear end to give out. Hopefully once he starts feeling a little bit better and we get some groceries on him also, that will improve a little bit. We will be starting a lot of joint supplements with him (Ethel too). His ears are infected so we will be treating those. He also has several teeth that will need to be removed. So when we schedule him for neuter we will also do a dental on him. His testicles are different sizes, and his prostate feels a little enlarged. We can’t rule out cancer, but the vet feels pretty good that this is just from being an older unaltered dog. Overall, good vet visit.

1/21/21 7pm Fred Update: Lots of rest but this guy is so much better! He really scared me. He’s still very weak in the back end and falls a lot. But he hasn’t had any explosive diarrhea since getting home (there was one very unfortunate incident in the car on the way there but it’s not like Hermione hasn’t already christened that van with so it’s cool). He ate dinner and took his meds. I’ll give them one more small meal later tonight. Thank you everyone!!! |
Neville showed Fred how to eat a pupcup today. He only got one lick cuz of his tummy.
We don’t want a repeat of Wed night But once he feels better this will be a regular thing.
(Ethel was terrified of the pupcup but I’m sure once she has a lick she will be a Starbucks addict like me )

We weren’t online much today. Mostly because I had to chase these 2 toddlers around all day. They’re tuckered out now. And I’m ready for a drink
Bless his heart. He’s very cute.
2/8/21 Update:
We’ve got a little bad news about Fred...he had that mass that popped up on his inner back leg… I sent a picture to our vet and she said it just kinda looks like a fatty mass and she said would check it out when he came in today. well she just aspirated it and it is a mast cell tumor!!! She thinks it’s going to be a longer , complicated surgery since it is not a well formed mass. So we’re just proceeding with what we plan to do today (neuter, dental, and entropion). And then send out the testicle to make sure that isn’t cancer too, but now I don’t have a good feeling about that. She’s going to do an injection of Benadryl and then we can continue that at home to try to keep it from spreading. And I’ll start him up on a bunch of anti-cancer foods and supplements like golden paste. Then maybe we can go back in later after the lab comes back on the testicle. Poor Fred. This isn’t the news we wanted He’s about to go under now so please send some good thoughts his way for an easy surgery with no complications. |
Ethel had a little swollen area next to her tail pocket yesterday and this morning. Assumed it was just a little inflamed from Fred licking or maybe her rubbing it since her tail pocket is infected. Got home a bit ago and it’s huuuuge. Looks like it’s about to rupture. Fantastic. Luckily she’s already on antibiotics. Doing warm compresses now. Left a message for the vet. Again. I’m gonna have to take more than cookies next visit Here’s some nice pics before Images of the rear end so you can choose to look or not.
Who remembers Libby’s bucket list? It was so much fun
and she got to experience some amazing things at the age of 15. Well, we want to start giving Fred & Ethel the same experience. Ethel has a couple big surgeries coming up and Fred has a undefined mast cell tumor that we are still weighing the risks and benefits of attempting to remove. We hope they have a nice long life left but why not start their retirement bucket list now! Donate via PayPal or Venmo - and don’t forget to put your idea in the comments. And please make it reasonable. As much as we would love to take them to a beach we live in the Midwest. I’ll gladly splurge and buy them a steak to grill up, but 100% it won’t be the most expensive wagyu beef from japan, k? K thanks lol PayPal : HoosierBulldogRescue@gmail.com Venmo: @hoosierbulldogrescue |

When you’re fasting for surgery, so the momager orders you a water instead of a pupcup.
Tail amputation surgery is today… Wish me luck! It’s a big surgery. And wish the momager luck because keeping Fred from licking my incision Will likely be a full-time job -Ethel |
Just got word my wife is out of surgery. Her tail was really really bad. And some other stuff came up too. We’ll post an update with all the info a little later when we go pick her up.

Ethel's tail amp went very well. The infection was very deep so she also has a drain.
Guess who’s butt looks so good that the dogtor took out the sutures early. This girl
