Duke is available for adoption. This old sexy guy wants to be the only man in your life (no other pets in the home). He has Cushings and will need to be on meds lifelong forever. But he’s an A+ couch potato and cute as a button.
Duke came to us from a shelter in Indiana. His dad had gone into a nursing home and he was surrendered to the shelter. Sadly, he had not been cared for in quite some time. Duke’s neglected condition was a painful reminder that we need to check in on our elderly family, friends, and neighbors. With a simple bath and some snout soother, Duke looked so much better already. Unfortunately, Duke had an elevation in liver enzymes on his lab work. He has been on several supplements for his liver over the last 3 months and we just redid his lab work. Unfortunately he has not shown improvement. He will be scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound soon and we will likely be changing his diet to a liver protocol. Since coming into rescue, his skin has improved, he's not as bloated, and he has shown a drastic increase in energy (and mischievousness lol) so we'll just keep focusing on quality of life and do the best we can to get him healthy.

8-14-19 Update:
Lab work is back, Heart worm negative (yay!) will retest in 6 months for confirmation. Tick born disease negative! No parasites seen in fecal! Yay! He has an elevated white blood cell count - but he has double ear infection and skin infections so that’s not surprising. He’s on antibiotics for his skin, and he’s being wiped with medicated wipes as well as bathed in My Dog Foo twice a week and using their skin balms on his ouchie Spots. He’s also on some heavy duty medicated ear drops. So all of that should clear up in no time. More concerning is that his liver enzymes are really elevated. I’ve already picked up Denamarin from the vet and we’ll start it tonight when I get home from work. He’s getting a lot of real whole foods that are great for liver support. So we will retest that in one month. He also had some crystals in his urine, but almost every single dog that comes in has them in their urine, a month or two on high quality food and lots of fresh filtered water, and crystals disappear. Every time. It’s all about the diet folks. All-About-The-Diet. |
12-16-19 Update:
Rechecking my liver values today! I’ve been in rescue going on 4 months now & I feel so much better! I have a lot more energy now & I’m super happy. But there’s still something off. I appear to have lost weight, but the scale is the same. My backbone is a little more visible than one would like, but I’m nice and thick in the chest. They changed my diet last month and now I don’t have any scabs anymore, but my hair still isn’t growing back well on my back. I still lick my feet some at night. My poops are better than they were but still not normal. So Dr Florence is giving me a really good exam, we are sending out labs, & we’ll see what else we can do. I’m getting a B12 injection today and we will probably add in some Chinese herbs once we see how my labs look. |

Duke has been with us for nearly a year now. When we pulled him from the shelter he was a crusty crippled old man. When his elderly father went into assisted-living, it was discovered how bad Dukes condition was. After just a good bath and Snout Soother, he looks like a completely different dog. We discovered he had Cushing’s disease and have been treating him for that. Today he goes for a recheck of lab work to see how the meds are working. Duke does not tolerate other animals, so he needs a Home without other pets. He does have a lot more energy now he can be pretty playful. Walks not enjoyed He will need lifelong treatment for his Cushings. |
