Cooper came to us all the way from New Orleans, Louisiana! We got word on a Tuesday that he was scheduled for euthanasia 2 days later. That wasn't going to happen on our watch! We got the OK to pull on the following day and by Thursday he was on a long road trip to Indiana!
More info will come as we get to know this guy!
9-19-19 - SUPER COOPER PUPDATE
Cooper had a vet visit on Tuesday 9/17. Here’s the scoop on Coop: We knew he was positive for hookworms at the shelter, but we ran a fecal to see if that was cleared up from their dewormer or if we needed to treat. He came back positive for hookworms as well as coccidia. So he’s on medication for both. His accuplex came back negative for heart worms and tick born disease. Since no history is known, we’ll recommend his new family repeat that test at the 6 month mark to be sure (It takes 6 months for heart worm to develop into adults that are detectable on tests. We retest all of our dogs at the 6 month mark if still in rescue). His skin actually looks pretty good now. His head wounds are healing up nicely. He has a slight ear infection that we’re treating. He also has a couple broken teeth.
Lab work…. some things were off: Total protein is elevated, probably because globulin is elevated. Suspect secondary to inflammation and infection noted in ear, or parasites. He also has an elevated phosphorous level. The most common cause for hyperphosphatemia is kidney disease, but Coopers kidney levels look ok. His T4 level is also on the low normal. He doesn’t seem to be hypothyroid though so, just something we’ll monitor. We’ll recheck everything (labs and fecal) in about 3 weeks to confirm things are looking better and not worse. Hoping this guy just needs some good food and love!
If you’d like to contribute to his vet bills and grocery bills, click that donate button below to help out! His estimated medical bills will be around $1,000 (initial exam, labs, parasite meds, ear meds, neuter, dental with extractions, microchip, heartworm preventative, and lots and lots of good food).
